Well, anyway, it needs a pretty face, logo, sound bites, some great copy for talk shows, talking points, palette, border and fill patterns, some quasi-absurd dogma that people can get fanatical about, a style guide, secret handshake.

About me and brand design: I happened into branding while doing what we called at the time, "special projects" in the trend forecasting world. I'm a futurist and in those days, the mid 90's I developed futuristic vision into whole brands or parts of brands depending on my clients needs. Toward the end of the decade, 'branding' was the big thing in graphic design and advertising. Connected to that world too, I realized this is what I do and it pays more with that name because companies are dedicating more of their budgets to it than they do to 'special projects' through trend forecasting firms. I love brand design and see it as a major part of creating the world we want.

Tell me about you. And please feel free to ask questions.

Last year in response to the missing explanation that clearly described the whole of what a brand is -- it's a new industry and steams out of older industries (graphic design, advertising, marketing...) so there is a lot of miss and partial information --- I wrote an explanation, titled: 'a brand is' and included it on my company's website. The explanation will be part of a book when I have a chance to develop it. Right now the site is down for simplification and redesign. I'd like to share it with you though so when we have the first parts of the site up (including the 'a brand is' section), I'll post a link here.

In the meantime, here are some of the major books that can shed some light on the subject: A New Brand World --- The Brand Gap << I think a very good one but more written for clarification within the industry than for the general public --- Be Your Own Brand --- Emotional Branding --- The Culting of Brands.

I recommend A New Brand World and The Brand Gap most out of what's out there. And, as I mentioned, I do see an actual 'brand gap' in written material on the subject in two areas: 1. a text that informs an entrepreneur like yourself so you know the value of branding and are armed with the savvy to budget for, hire and utilize an excellent brand design firm. And 2. a book that goes deeper to explain the subtle societal implications of highly intelligent brand design on both the success and longevity of a business as well as how that business shapes culture as we know it.

Hi,

I'm just getting started with a venture that seems to me to be an exercise in creating a "brand". This is new for me - I've never tried to do anyhing quite like it before.

Its like this: A friend of mine has opened a store in Hollywood called "Rosemary's Billygoat" and I am an artist who has lived in Bali and generally travelled SE Asia for the last several years (and thus have the ability to have this stuff made over there - I speak Indonesian, etc.). The goal is to create an ecclectic line of "things" that evoke a certain aesthetic - in this case goth/heavy metal/fetish with a heavy dose of absurdist black humor. This encompasses clothes, accessories, toys, and even sex toys.

I've been thinking alot about how this can be a brand. Seems to me "Hello Kitty" is a brand, or "X-Large", and these merchandising endeavors are not restricted to any particular class of things really, but are just a definable, knowable, recognizable style that can be applied to anything from pencil sharpeners to lingerie.

I'd like to see Rosemary's Billygoat develop into a brand in the sense I'm describing. Can anyone give me any suggestions? Are there any sites that explore marketing strategy in this kind of merchandising of style itself?
